TV show challenges family to boost wealth

TV show challenges families to boost wealth: Fiscal overhaul awaits BC town’s families (by Mike Hager, Calgary Herald, August 21, 2011)

Can a group of 100 families band together to buck the economic trend and increase its collective net worth by $1 million in just 10 weeks?

A new reality show titled Million Dollar Neighbourhood, produced by Vancouver-based Force Four Entertainment and the Canadian arm of Oprah Winfrey’s TV network, aims to find out.

Force Four, whose Village on a Diet challenged families in Taylor, B.C., to lose a literal ton of weight, hopes to score another ratings win in Aldergrove, B.C., about 60 kilometres southeast of Vancouver.

The show will force each participating household to scrimp, downsize, barter, earn, share, swap and collaborate to see their net worth increase by an average of $1,000 each week. “We truly are trying a giant social experiment,” said Force Four representative Sean DeVries.

“People would rather talk about sex than money. You can only hide your weight to a certain degree, but everybody can hide their financial issues.”
